The Clerk of Courts is one of nine County “Row Officers.” They are known as Row Offices because historically their offices were in a row in a long hallway of the County Courthouse, and also because their names appeared in a row on the ballot in the year that the County officials are elected. The other Row Officers are the Controller, the Coroner, the District Attorney, the Prothonotary, the Recorder of Deeds, the Register of Wills, the Sheriff and the Treasurer. These County officers are elected in the same year as the County Commissioners.
The Clerk of Courts is the manager of the office that maintains the files for the County Criminal Court. This office also is responsible for collecting and distributing the fines, costs and restitution monies that are assessed against those individuals who are convicted of crimes by a judge or a jury.
Physically located on the second floor of the County Courthouse in Norristown, the office presently has 36 full time employees and two part timers.
